Plymouth, Gateway To The World - Poem

Artwork Title: Gateway To The World

Beneath the shadow of Plymouth Hoe,

Where ancient tides, still ebb and flow,

Buildings rose from ashes, once more,

Just like the many times, it had before.

The war left its mark, very deep,

But Plymouth’s heart, could not sleep,

With every brick and every beam,

Plymothians a future, dared to dream.

Civic Centre, standing proud and tall,

Became a beacon, for us all,

A symbol, of a future bright,

Together a city, doing what’s right.

The markets buzzed with life again,

As home to Plymouth, came its men,

The scent of bread, of fish, of tea,

A bustling city once more, free.

In theatres, music filles the air,

While children laugh without a care,

The streets, once dark with war’s embrace,

Now shines with hope, with joy and grace.

Yet still, the sea called out its name,

The waves that whispered of Plymouth’s fame,

From Drake’s bold game to sailors’ plight,

Plymouth’s future became, so right.

And as the sixties forward rolled,

The city’s story was onward told,

Of resilience, pride, as its dreams unfurled,

Plymouth is truly, the ‘Gateway To The World’.

GATEWAY TO THE WORLD: Digital Photograph by F McCullough Copyright 2024 ©. The photograph shows an open old gate, leading into a field of a ripening golden grass crop. In the distance is the greener countryside, which overlooks the shimmering deep blue sea, gleaming with sunlight. The gate is open because it represents ‘The Gateway To The World’, the title of the poem, which it was created to illustrate. The colour-matched  bevelled blue frame with partial curved edges, sits against a wall to provide a 3-D gateway effect.
