Yelverton lies between the road from Plymouth to
Tavistock, that was further developed by the Duke of Bedford in 1822.
Sir Francis Drake. In 1590 to 1591. Built Drake’s Leat in
order to carry water from the River Meavy that lies above Sheepstor, to
supply the now City of Plymouth.
Mining has occurred in the vicinity of Yelverton in the
past. Surface granite, known as moorstone was mined at the South Roborough
Down Mine, circa 1860. Close by was also Yeoland Tin Mine.

- Mr Jack Lester Butler
lived at Pounds House, after which the public House Buller Arms was
named.
- Sir Francis Drake lived
at the nearby Buckland Abbey.
- Buckland Abbey was originally purchased by Sir Richard Grenville
of Bideford, who bought the Abbey itself and surrounding demesne.
- Richard Crimes, a London Haberdasher.
- John Slanning, a London lawyer and merchant, bought more
land around, including Bickleigh.
- William de Pollei gave the tithes of Harrowbeer, a part
of Buckland with its own hall, to the Abbey of St. Martin at Sees in
Normandy.
- The Elford family, originated from Elfordtown Farm,
Harrowbeer. Subsequently the family purchased Langstone at Sheepstor,
now below Burrator reservoir and were at Bickham, home now of Lord
Roborough.
- Sir William Elford Bart, who was born at Bickham in
1749, became the Mayor of Plymouth, MP for Plymouth, and Recorder. He
was friends of the great men of his day including Prime Minister William
Pitt.
- The Elfords still reside locally, having farmed at
Cornwood, and Yealmpton, before settling in Oreston and founding the
Oreston and Turnchapel Steamboat Company.
- Thomas Tyrwhitt, secretary to the Duchy of Cornwall,
friend of the Prince Regent, and also builder or Princetown and Prince
Hall. Circa 1810. Thomas built the Plymouth and Dartmoor horse drawn
Railway from Sutton Harbour to Princetown railway.
